Why Can’t Our Food Just Be “Real Food”?

What’s all this talk about GMO’s?

GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Agricultural products are segmented into two groups: (1) those that arehigh-risk of being GMO because they are currently in commercial production, and (2) those that have a monitored risk because suspected or known incidents of contamination have occurred and/or the crops have genetically modified relatives in commercial production with which cross-pollination (and consequently contamination) is possible. For more information on the Non-GMO Project’s testing and verification of risk ingredients and processed foods, please see theNon-GMO Project Standard.

High-Risk Crops (in commercial production; ingredients derived from these must be tested every time prior to use in Non-GMO Project Verified products (as of December 2011):

  • Alfalfa (first planting 2011)
  • Canola (approx. 90% of U.S. crop)
  • Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Cotton (approx. 90% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Papaya (most of Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres)
  • Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Sugar Beets (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010)
  • Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000 acres)

Some of my favorites that I frequently buy are Late July chips, Kind bars, Lunberg Rice.  There’s a bunch more and I encourage you to go on really learn about what our government is doing to our food.

Why can’t our food just be real food like when our great grandparents were living?  I just don’t understand it!

Here’s a great article from Eat Local Grown!

I also encourage you to start your own garden and use non-gmo organic seeds.  Every little bit that we do, will help us in maintaining our families health!

Do You Spoil Your Chickens?

Seriously, who spoils their chickens?  Well, when we decided to start raising chickens, the first thing that came to my mind was how cute I could decorate the coop!  It’s their home and I wanted it to look pretty. I wander sometimes if they know just how spoiled they are?

One day when I was at my usual health food store shopping for my family, I started looking at the seeds and beans and thought “These would be healthy for Rusty and the girls” (AKA chickens), uhm….

What I purchased above is green and yellow lentils and barley.  The total cost came to $5.00 and they are all organic.  Do you know much about lentils?  They have amazing health benefits.  Lentils are loaded with fiber, protein, potassium, zinc, B Vitamins, iron and magnesium.

So, I placed some in a bowl and filled it with water and placed a towel on it.  I let this set overnight.

Soaking beans, nuts, seeds and grains assist with digestion and give us great enzymes.  When eaten straight out of the bag, it wreaks havoc on our digestive system.

After they sit overnight, place them in glass mason jars and put them in the fridge.  Now, every time you go out to the coop, take a jar and sprinkle in your chicks feeder.

I’ll talk about sprouting them in another post and I’ll share with you a recipe for some “treats” for your chicks. Just think about how much healthier your eggs and chickens will be! 🙂

See, I told you I spoiled my chickens!

The Daniel Plan – Faith & Nurturing Your Soul

What’s this Daniel Plan thing all about?  Glad you asked….

The Daniel Plan is not just a silly diet that you do for 40 days and then go back to what you were doing before.  It’s a Lifestyle!!!

Many of us are disciplined when it comes to spiritual practices like reading our Bible or going to church, but we may not have that same discipline when it comes to caring for our physical health. Others are careful about eating habits, but ignore caring for the soul. But our spiritual health and physical well-being are intimately connected— and each can strengthen the other.

This week’s Bible Study introduces you to the new book and study, The Daniel Plan. The Daniel Plan is built on five essentials of faith, food, fitness, focus and friends. It is far more than a diet plan, but rather a program aimed at helping individuals develop an overall healthier lifestyle physically, mentally and spiritually. The title of the Daniel Plan was derived from the book of Daniel in the Bible, which gives the account of the prophet Daniel.

Watch the Brief Video of The Daniel Plan

I’m leading a group at my church on The Daniel Plan and would love for you to join me!  You can order the books and work along side me virtually.  I’ll be blogging about my experience over the next 40 days.  Actually, we will go a little longer so we can start our detox and get acclimated to ridding our bodies of the “bad stuff”.

These include: sugar of any kind, gluten, dairy and caffeine.   Most people find out that when they eliminate a certain food and re-introduce it, they realize they may a food sensitivity.

So, if you are like me and sick and tired of being sick and tired, join me on my journey to a healthy life!

I’ve given you the links to everything you need to get started!

            PURCHASE BOOK

The prophet Daniel is a model in many ways of an individual who was strong in body, mind, heart and spirit and found his power, purpose and strength in devotion to God. In the first chapter of Daniel, the prophet challenges the king’s official guard to a health contest in which some young men would eat the king’s diet of rich food while Daniel and his three friends eat healthy fare including vegetables and water. For this reason, the Daniel Plan food essential is built on eating healthier, fresher and more natural foods.

In additional chapters, Daniel proves his strength further, showing he was fit to serve, whenever, wherever, under extreme difficulty, and in any and all circumstances. Daniel was recognized early for his potential and was chosen as a young boy to serve the king of Babylon. He diligently trained physically, intellectually, relationally, and spiritually with the purpose to be the best he could possibly be. This is an example of a healthy lifestyle under the Daniel Plan.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.Philippians 4:13

Discussion Questions

1. Pastor Rick talked about Paul’s struggle against his sinful nature, which he writes honestly about in Romans 7. Which of the five Essentials (Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, or Friends) comes to mind when you read Romans 7: knowing what to do but not doing it?

2. Many of us wrestle with shame— feeling condemned or not good enough. If the Bible says that we have no condemnation, what does that mean to you personally?

3. Jimmy talked about the truth that grace means we don’t have to be perfect. Have you ever wrestled with perfectionism? If so, how has that impacted your relationships with God and others?

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight; keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.Proverbs 4:20-22 (NIV)

Faith Next Steps

1. Pair up with a buddy. This will be your spiritual and encouragement partner for the study, your new Daniel Plan buddy. We have learned that people who do The Daniel Plan with another person
or a group lose 50 percent more weight! Commit to checking in with each other throughout the week. Even a short text of encouragement is a loving way to let your buddy know you care. Now each of you answer this question: What are you hoping God will do during the
next six weeks of this study? After sharing, pray briefly for each other.

2. Based on your conversation and prayer, select one of the verses from this week’s study that you think would be particularly encouraging to your partner.Share that verse with them by writing it on a card for them, or texting it to them. Call or text each other at least once during the week, and pray for each other during the week.

3. Pick a Bible verse from any part of today’s lesson. Write it down, and then read it every day. Try memorizing it and sharing with the group next time. Consider taking on this challenge: memorizing one verse each week during the six weeks of the study.

What Next?

Prayer for Today

Father, thank you so much for what you’re going to do in our lives. Thank you in advance for giving us the desire to become healthier. We want to get well. We trust that by living out the biblical principles of The Daniel Plan, we will feel better, have more energy, and, Lord willing, live a healthier and longer life. Increase our faith so that we might be a better witness for your glory. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Sunday Sermons – Do We Believe This Book?

We’ve been studying a series at my church about – “Do We Believe This Book?”, meaning, The Bible…….

Do we?

If so, then according to Luke 14:26-35, the scripture says that we should hate our father, mother, wife and children and brothers and sisters.  How can that be?  God is all about love, right?

What the scriptures are saying is, it’s “LIKE” we hate our family so much that all we desire is God!  We need to love God with a superior love!!!

It becomes easy to love HIM, when we understand how much he does for us!!!

Ponder over those verses this week and really think about “Have you ever come to Jesus on HIS terms?

Sunday Blessings!!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies and They’re Gluten-Free

If there’s one thing about me, it’s I LOVE CHOCOLATE!

I actually make some really good chocolate chip cookies, if I do say so my self LOL.  I’m about 80/20 on using Organic/Natural ingredients and I use really good chocolate chips.

Well, lately I’ve came across a cookie that is out of this world and I can’t turn back!  I still make my own, but these are just “different”.  The best part is: their Gluten Free

These cookies come in a variety, but my FAV is the Chocolate Chip.  They just melt in your mouth!

They also have a nice crunch to them!

You actually get (2) of these cute little packages inside the bag.  Sorry there’s only one in the photo, but I ate the other package. LOL

That’s the good thing about these cookies.  Even though I love them so much, I know just to have 1 or 3 at a time. 😉

I love their small concept and pray that they never sell out to a big corporation.  I just might take a trip to see them one day, who knows!

If you haven’t tried these, you are missing out!  They are filled with good stuff, well as much as a cookie can be filled with!  I don’t feel guilty eating these, NOT one bit!

I’m giving you a coupon below so you can enjoy them too!!!  Let me know what you think!

Are You the Submissive Type?

We’ve been reading in 1 Peter this week and I hope you’re still with me.  Today’s reading was in Chapter 3.  Is it just coincidence that this chapter is about us?  WIVES……Or is God trying to tell us something LOL.

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. ~ 1 Peter 3:1-2

What does that mean? BE SUBJECT???

Did you know that we are called to be submissive to our husbands?  I wish I could see a show of hands when wives wanted to do anything but be submissive LOL

I find it difficult sometimes to be that submissive wife that God wants me to be.  We are to have a respectful and pure conduct, I get it, but it can be hard sometimes.  How do you tackle things when they arise between you and your husband?

In return, our husbands are to love us; honoring us as the weaker vessel.  When we as women and wives have a peace in our life, then it will reflect on the outside when we communicate with others, meaning our husbands and children.  Don’t we want them to see how loving we are?

God desires us to be beautiful not only on the outside but on the inside as well.  When we are filled with joy and inner peace, we can then do what we’ve been called to do – Love one another!

Let’s see where we are lacking in areas in our life and ask God to help us, help us be the wives that HE designed us to be!

I hope you are enjoying this study as much as I am.  Tell your friends about it and share my blog so they can benefit from the Glory of God too!  Isn’t it great that we can get up in the morning and have some direction on what to read in the Bible?

I hope you have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here next Friday!

Be Blessed!
