Disappointed about Burt’s Bees and the Winner of my Lip Butter Giveaway!

When I found out that Clorox (yes, you heard me, Clorox) had acquired the humble Burt’s Bees company I was really disappointed.  Now, it’s 2014 and I’m just hearing that Clorox purchased them back in 2007. I’ve been using their trusted product for years and never knew this until recently.

You can read about the purchase HERE.

The story of Burt is a charming one gone bad. Burt Shavitz, a beekeeper in Dexter, Maine, lived an extremely humble life selling honey in pickle jars from the back of his pickup truck and resided in the wilderness inside a turkey coop without running water or electricity.

In the summer of 1984, Shavitz was driving down the road and spotted a hitchhiker who needed a lift to the post office. He pulled over and picked up Roxanne Quimby, a 34-year-old woman who eventually became Shavitz’s lover and business partner. Quimby started helping him tend to the beehives, and that eventually led to the all natural-inspired health care products made with Shavitz’s honey and the birth of Burt’s Bees products.

Burt’s story and very powerful narrative gave Burt’s Bees products their legitimacy in my book. Creative entrepreneurs and knowledgeable consumers together working their magic; not the results of a corporate behemoth out to dominate the marketplace.

However, Quimby and Shavitz’s relationship became ‘sticky’ in the late ’90s for reasons unclear, yet probably having little to do with honey. Their romantic break up carried over to the split of their business partnership as well. In 1999, Quimby bought out Shavitz’s shares of the company for a small six-figure sum. Quimby then continued, becoming phenomenally successfully and growing sales to $43.5 million by 2002.

In 2003, a private equity firm, AEA investors, purchased 80 percent of Burt’s Bees from Quimby, with her retaining a 20 percent share and a seat on the board. In 2006, John Replogle, the former general manager of Unilever’s skin-care division became CEO and president of Burt’s Bees. The company was sold to Clorox in late October 2007 for $925 million.

Quimby was paid more than $300 million for her stake in Burt’s Bees. At the time of that deal, Shavitz reportedly demanded more money, and Quimby agreed to pay him $4 million. Quimby now refurbishes fancy, swank homes in Florida, travels the world and buys massive chunks of land in her free time. Our bearded man Shavitz, on the other hand, now 73 and unchanged, continues to reside amidst nature in his now-expanded turkey coop, which still remains absent of electricity or running water.

The Burt’s Bees story is disconcerting. I vaguely remembered long ago that one of my favorite ice cream products, Ben & Jerry’s, sold out. Unilever (which also owns Breyers), the giant conglomerate with an estimated market cap of $50 billion and close to 174,000 employees, bought Ben & Jerry’s in 2000 for $326 million.

This is where I started researching on how to make my own lip balm.  Well, I actually call it “Lip Butter”. I promise to everyone that I will never ever sell to a big company if by chance someone would approach me. LOL, seriously, NEVER!

My products that I make are created with everyone in mind.  There are no hidden products and I will never say the word NATURAL.  That word can mean a lot of things.  They are honest and real products that I use and I only purchase my products from the best companies.

Here’s my post on my recipe for lip butter and where I buy all of my goodies. 🙂

Now, ONWARD we go……

It’s More Than Just a Camp!

Today our 4-H Club went to Camp Boggy Creek and planted flowers and cleaned up SueLila Hollow.  It’s a memorial garden that you can go and spend time and just remember your loved ones.

IMG_1776 IMG_1778 IMG_1779 IMG_1769

I’m so proud of these kids!  They all worked really hard and the new revised garden will be a great place for campers and their families to go and visit on camper weekends.

Our local friends in the community let their horses live at camp for the summer so our campers can enjoy them.

Camp Boggy Creek is specifically designed for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses and allows them to safely enjoy the activities of a “traditional” camp. Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children whose lives have been a series of medical procedures and hospital stays are transformed into just “kids.” They have a chance to be with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone.

Camp Boggy Creek is a permanent, year-round facility where children ages 7 through 16 with chronic or life-threatening illnesses and their families can come to Camp at no charge to them. Camp Boggy Creek provides a safe and exciting camp experience for children from throughout Florida suffering from:

  • Arthritis / Rheumatic
  • Asthma (severe)
  • Cancer
  • Craniofacial
  • Diabetes (family retreat weekend only)
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart
  • Hemophilia / Bleeding disorders
  • Immune Deficiency
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Kidney
  • Sickle Cell
  • Spina Bifida
  • Transplants
  • Ventilator Assisted Care (family retreat weekend only)

Programs at Camp Boggy Creek include week long summer sessions as well as family retreat weekends and each includes full medical coverage with on-site professionals in the illness specialty being served.

The Camp Boggy Creek experience is more than a fun-filled getaway. It helps children and their families to better cope with the day-to-day challenges they face in dealing with serious illness.

TAKE THEM A MEAL – Tips on taking food to a family in need

Ever wander what to make and take for a family in need?  Maybe they just had a baby or a loved one is sick in the hospital.  Taking a meal will comfort them in more ways than one.  The last thing most people think about is preparing a meal during a hectic time in their life.

If it’s something I am organizing for church or our community center, I use Take Them a Meal.  It’s a perfect way to organize a larger group so the family will get a variety of food to eat.

Keep in mind, you don’t always have to just bring dinner to a loved one.  They still eat other meals throughout the day, so get creative!  You could bring a breakfast casserole, homemade granola and fruit for breakfast or a sandwich platter for lunch and of course, you can’t forget snacks and dessert – go for fresh fruit or homemade ice cream.

I recently organized meals for one of our pastors as he and his wife just had a baby.  I told them to let others provide them meals, so that they can spend time getting acclimated to their new little one.  So, they still have to eat, right?  That’s where the church came in…….

So, I decided to make my homemade baked potato soup and serve it with a salad and homemade ranch along with a baguette of crusty bread.

For dessert, I thought about something easy for them to prepare.  What better thing to do than to curl up on the couch with a loved one and watch a movie and eat popcorn!  And, what’s popcorn without something sweet?  I added a small bag of m&m’s to go along with it.

I know I am anti-dye, but once in a while won’t hurt ya! 😉

I packaged everything in this cute basket, which I bought specifically just to hold my soup jars in LOL. Hey, everything has to have a purpose ya know!

Taking someone in need a meal doesn’t have to be a big stress event!  If you don’t have time to prepare yourself, then grab take out or you can even give them gift cards to their favorite restaurants.  You could also take it a step further and order pizza and have it delivered to their home.  Just give them a heads first so they don’t think it’s some prank when they open the door LOL.

Be blessed!
