The Benefits of Holy Basil

Tulsi, also called Holy Basil, is revered throughout India as a sacred herb infused with healing power and is considered to be the “Queen of Herbs.” Abundant in antioxidants, Certified Organic Tulsi Tea is not only great tasting; it offers stress relief, increased energy and a boost to your natural immune system.  I personally have about 2-3 cups of hot tea everyday.

Modern research has classified Tulsi as an adaptogenic herb. Adaptogens have been shown to support the body’s natural immune system while relieving the body’s negative reaction to stress. Adaptogenic herbs have been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicines for thousands of years to promote and maintain wellness. Many adaptogenic herbs have been referred to by herbalists as rejuvenative herbs, qi tonic herbs, rasayanas or restorative herbs. They help the body adapt to environmental, physical and emotional stressors, support normal functions, and restore balance.

My favorite flavors are the Original and the Green.  Check out all of their flavors HERE.

Organic India’s Tulsi – Holy Basil Formula and certified organic Tulsi Teas include three varieties of Tulsi leaves: Rama, Vana, and Krishna. Each variety has a slightly different look, taste and smell and when combined, create a perfectly balanced herbal infusion with an array of health benefits including:

  • Support for the immune system
  • Increased stamina and endurance
  • Relief and protection from everyday stress
  • Abundant antioxidant

So go get you a box of this pretty amazing tea!  You will start feeling the benefits just like I do!!

How many of us are always on a diet?  You know what I am talking about, right? I mainly here people say “I really need to go on a diet”.  But, what does that really mean?  We eat one way for a period of time and then eat another way later down the road?  Have you ever wondered if one diet works for you but maybe wouldn’t work for someone else?

images (1)

Well, I am excited to share with you some amazing truth about diets and some common deficiencies people are having.

There are hundreds of diets that have worked for millions of people.  Every person has a unique physiology and different diets may work best at various points in someone’s life. – Dr. Josh Axe

Remember that nutrition course I am taking?  I’m only two weeks in and I am already learning a lot!  Now, before we go any further.  I am not taking sides on any of these diets.  This is just for informational purposes only.  I will share with you at the end which diet I choose and why. 🙂

I am going to start with the most popular diet that’s floating around right now and that would be THE PALEO DIET.  Have you heard of it?  I’m sure you have.

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

Real Food                                                           Not Organic focused

Eliminates Grains                                                 Consume Pork and Shellfish

Dr. Loren Cordaine is the founder of The Paleo Diet.  It is derived from The Paleolithic Diet aka Hunter-Gatherer from the Stone Age era.

Our next one is the VEGETARIAN/VEGAN DIET.

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

High in enzymes                                                  Carb overload

High in antioxidants                                              No Vitamin B12

Organic focused                                                    Amino Acid Dificiency

The TRADITIONAL DIET is most realistic.  It’s the way our ancestors ate.  Dr. Weston A. Price, DDS searched the reason for the causes of dental decay.  His  assumptions were right – nutritional deficiencies.  You can read all about The Weston Price Foundation and support their cause here.  He believes we should just Eat Real Food!  Things like bone broth, sour dough bread, organic food and grass-fed meats.

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

Real Food                                                             More time spent in kitchen

Historically proven

Easy to digest

Probiotic rich

The GLUTEN-FREE DIET is probably as popular as The Paleo Diet right now.  Have you noticed more and more food companies are listing items as Gluten-Free?  Why is it when I was a kid, GF was never even heard of?  I actually was tested and found out I have a gluten intolerance.  That was a few years ago.  I’ve done some research though and I’m finding that it’s not the gluten that is the problem.  It’s what they are spraying on all of the wheat farms and the companies that are putting all of these chemicals in our food.  I have found that if I eat unbromated flour, it doesn’t bother me.  Pretty cool , uh?

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

No gluten                                                           Conventional grains

Less Allergenic                                                     Wrong focus

Doesn’t address the cause

The next few diets are probably some that you never heard of before.  I hadn’t until Dr. Axe went over these in class.

The SCD (Simple Carbohydrate Diet)/GAPS DIET is great for anyone with an auto-immune disease.

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

Easiest to digest                                                   Hard compliance (restrictive)

Nutrient Dense

Heals the gut

The KETOGENIC DIET is great for cancer or Alzheimer patients.

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

Fast fat loss                                                          No carbs

No sugar                                                              Short term

Healthy fat

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

Burn fat                                                             Low in healthy fat

Build muscle                                                       Non-organic

Nutrient dense                                                    Hard on the gut

POSITIVES                                                         NEGATIVES

GI System reset                                                   Low fuel

Hormone support                                                 Long term deficiencies

Less calories                                                       Tend to overeat during meals

So, now that you’ve read about all of the diets out there, which one do you choose?  I know it can be overwhelming, right?

I personally eat The Traditional Diet.  I just eat real food.  I love sipping on bone broth or eating as much organic fruits and veggies as I can (budgeting allowed).  I grow a lot of my own so that helps for the most part.

There is also another side to diets and that is Nutrient Deficiencies.  Most of us do not get enough vitamins and minerals in our food so you might need to supplement.

I learned many years ago from Jordan Rubin, “It all starts in your gut”.  He’s absolutely right.  Dr. Axe stated that “If you aren’t digesting properly, you will be vitamin deficient”.

So what are some of the most common deficiencies?  Let’s take a look:

  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D3
  • Omega-3
  • Enzymes
  • Antioxidants

*Men eat less fruits and veggies than women and they tend to eat fewer raw and organic.

  • Vitamin D3
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Probiotics
  • Vitamin B6
  • Healthy Fats

*Women actually consume more carbs than men.

  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin A
  • Probiotics
  • Omega-3

I’m so excited to be able to share this information to you.  Sorry if it was so long, but this is really valuable information.  I thank Dr. Josh Axe for teaching this course and I’m looking forward to the many weeks ahead and learning more about nutrition.

Here’s to your health!

Embrace What God Has For You

“Take your everyday, ordinary life — your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.”(Romans 12:1 MSG)

The Daniel Plan integrates that which we tend to separate: food, friends, fitness, focus, and faith. Tackling the five essentials together actually makes them easier.

Day 3 – Reducing inflammation and reversing insulin resistance!

I think today is my favorite so far of speakers.  Since I have an auto-immune disorder, it seems pretty fitting to connect with what everyone is talking about today.  About four years ago I was diagnosed with Leaky Gut, Hypothyroidism and Adrenal Fatigue.  While it’s been a roller coaster at times, I will tell you that I have NEVER taken one prescription medicine to treat myself.  I actually refuse to put anything synthetic like that into my body.

Here’s some of my symptoms that I was having:

Joint Pain

Dry Eyes

If you are battling with any of the above symptoms, I hope and pray that you will join me on this summit.  It’s our duty to search out medical personnel that are really looking out for our health.  Even though I’ve never been diagnosed with Diabetes, I have decided to be preventative and feed my other organs, so this horrible disease doesn’t decide to land in my body!

Just click on the link above.  It’s not too late to grab a seat and listen!

Have you ever wandered where I buy my products that I use? (5)

When it comes to being Frugal, I’m right there with the best of them!  When I decide to buy something, rather it be something I need to make a DIY product or just something to consume either a food based product, a supplement or whatever, I always research on the internet to make sure I can find the best price without skimping on quality.

All of my homemade products, I only use the finest quality that I can find.  Same goes for anything that I am putting in my body.  It has to pass my standards before I will purchase it.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but the majority of the stuff I buy is on AMAZON.  You really can’t beat their prices and I love reading the reviews too!

I get a lot of inquiries from readers on where do I buy everything, so I decided to open up a store through AMAZON.  It will keep everything in one place so you don’t have to hop around.  I also earn an affiliate commission when you purchase through my store.  This helps me continue my blogging efforts and allows me to provide you with all of my tips, recipes and so on.

You can click on the photo below and it will take you right to my website.  I even have everything broken down by category.  Here is a sample of the canning supplies that I use.

You can read my full disclosure here. I hope you enjoy shopping and saving on Amazon!  Be sure and check back frequently as I am always adding new items!!!

How to make a Roux

What is a Roux (pronounced “roo”)?  It’s a thickener that chefs use in soups, stews and cream sauces. I make a roux when I am making my Homemade Mac ‘N Cheese and a variety of sauces and soups.

Guess what?  It’s super easy to make too!

There are different stages of roux’s and how long you cook the roux depends on what you’re using it for.  For example, if you are cooking something that’ s a lighter color, like alfredo or Homemade Mac ‘N Cheese, you would use the lighter roux.  If you are making a brown gravy or beef stew, you would use the darkest roux.

Read all about the different “Roux” stages HERE.

How to Make a Roux

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Begin with equal parts of butter and flour.

Umbromated/Unbleached Flour

Unsalted Real Butter (homemade, Troyer, Kerrygold, etc.)

Add butter to skillet on low heat.  As the butter melts, slowly add the flour and whisk together.  The mixture will be clumpy, but keep whisking until it’s thick and creamy.

And you’re done! See, making stuff from scratch is really quite easy and simple!!  Post some of your favorite recipes using a Roux here in the comments or on my Facebook Page!

I’m Going Back to School

download (1)

Well, I know she looks nothing like me, but I can’t believe at my age, I am going back to school!!!

My passion for nutrition, health and wellness is growing deeper and deeper so I have decided to take a nutrition class from none other than Dr. Josh Axe himself.  He is very respected in the health community, from right here in Central Florida and currently lives in Nashville.

I value all of his input and medical knowledge.  I had the pleasure of meeting him last fall at a workshop here in Mount Dora.  It was a small gathering as most people probably didn’t even know who he was or that he was even in town!

download (2)

I learned about Dr. Axe through my other following of Jordan Rubin.  When I got sick several years ago, Jordan was my go to guy to get me back on my feet.  I since then have found Dr. Axe and was so excited when he decided to offer this nutrition class online.

Here’s what I will be learning about in my class:

So, why am I wanting to learn all of this? Everything I am learning is everything that I went through when I got sick.  In 2010, I had to have a hysterectomy and ever since then I have been on a mission to figure out why I got so sick.  Everything that Dr. Axe is teaching me will allow me to further my knowledge and passion of nutrition so I can help others!

Stay tuned throughout the next few months and I hope you will join me on this journey!
