Monthly Archives: March 2015

In my journey to live a more simple life, what also comes with that is eating healthy.  I strive to grow my own veggies and have several fruit trees around our little homestead.

Did you know that there are actually some fruits and vegetables that you can eat conventionally and there’s some that should ONLY be eaten organically? (3)

Although I try and buy produce that is non-gmo, however, sometimes it’s hard to do that with budget restraints and availability.  When I do purchase conventional items, I take it home and wash/soak them in my High Alkaline water machine and I use Grapefruit Essential Oils.  That way I know I am getting all the chemicals and gunk off my food.

The EWG – Environmental Working Group has put out the 2015 list of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15.

You can download it HERE and print it out and carry it with you when you are going to stores.

Here’s to Clean Eating!!!

Join Me at the Diabetes World Summit!

Diabetes is something that is near and dear to me.  In 2013, my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  That means he has to give himself shots of insulin a minimum of four times a day.  Do you know someone who is diabetic?  Not a day goes by that I don’t think about some kind of way that my son could get off of his insulin.

Recently, I had a doctor tell him that he had an auto-immune disease that is probably the cause of this.  Uhmm, I want to learn more.  Won’t you join me and spread the word on The Diabetes World Summit!!!!

Do you spoil your chickens?  It’s kinda hard not to, right? (1)

Think about the life of a chicken.  They really don’t have much to do during the day except to peck at stuff and lay eggs, if they are a hen.  If it was me, I’d get bored, just saying.

A few years ago, I came up with a homemade yummy treat recipe and gave it to them if they were good LOL.  You can read about it HERE.

Recently, I came across a really neat and healthy treat to give my flock just so I can change things up a bit.  Again, boredom.

Hot Cake

Check out my friends at Farmer’s Helper.  They make several yummy treats to give to your chicks.  I’ve tried them all and my favorite is the Forage Cake and the Hot Cake just because they are fun looking!  I have to tell you that my flock enjoyed them too!  I hung the Hot Cake from the top of the run area in our coop and they each took turns pecking at it.  It’s a great Boredom Buster!!!!

Be sure and visit my friend Jill at and be sure and tell them I sent you!

Happy Spoiling!!!

Where do you store your spices? Well, I have a nice spice drawer, so you’d think I’d be all organized, right? (2)
Well, I am OCD like that, but it’s gotten out of hand lately so I thought I’d give it a nice sprucing up!

I buy my spices from several different places just for the mere fact of pricing and quality of the product. I’ve always alphabetized mine (I know, I’m OCD), but I need to get better at keeping them organized and going through them to check their expiration dates.

So, last night I pulled everything out, cleaned out the cabinet and started over. I emptied any of the jars that were expired and saved the bottle if it was glass and had an easy removable label (Hint: Trader Joe’s labels are so easy to come off). I filled up my sink with hot soapy water and put all the empty jars in there so I could clean and disinfect them.

The cute little bags that you see in the picture come from The Fresh Market. I usually just have them leaning against each other (still alphabetized), but it’s just not working for me.
I filled all the jars from the little spice bags and then I created labels ( I used the removable labels – Avery 5160).

I have three shelves on my spice cabinet, so I thought I would organize by category this go around. The top shelf is going to have all of my everyday spices – dill, cinnamon, turmeric, etc. The middle shelf will have my blends – Chicken, Steak, Taco Seasoning (I make my own), etc. Finally, the bottom shelf will hold my jars of things that I use occasionally in cooking but don’t want to get my BIG jars down. I have a little jar for my coconut sugar, flour, baking soda, etc. Do you do this to? It makes it easy if I’m making a roux or need a little bit of sugar to put in my homemade spaghetti sauce. I’ll post recipes on how to do both of these at another time. 🙂

So, here is my finished cabinet. They aren’t all matchy matchy yet. I figured this a start. I’m not sure yet it I want to go all glass bottles or the cute round tins. I like both of those looks, so I will probably stick with both of them and buy new ones here and there as I can afford them.

One other important thing I do, just to make my life simple and complete – I write down all of my spices and their expiration dates, so when I’m doing my weekly menu planning, I can see if I am running low and might need to purchase some.  Remember my Household Binder I created the first part of the year?  You can read all about it HERE.

The goal here is that they are organized. Now, you go re-do yours and either post your pics on my Facebook page or reply back here in the comments below.

Happy Organizing!!!!
